Roadworks on King's Rd might cause disruptions

Roadworks started this Wednesday on King's Road, it might affect drivers.
According to The Argus associations and businesses are not happy.

Southern Gas Networks has closed one lane from Cannon Place to West street for scheduled works. It estimates the works will take up to three weeks. Drivers are therefore expecting massive disruption at a time when thousands of tourists are visiting the city, according to The Argus.
The newspapers further states that the works are being done during the peak time which will affect local businesses.
Stuart Wilkie, chairman of The Lanes Traders’ Association, told The Argus: “It just lacks common sense.  Summer is a very important time of year for everyone here.  Why could it have not taken place in spring or, even better, in September or October, when it is quiet for business? It’s disappointing that they would do this when traders need all the help they can get.”

Labour councillor Gill Mitchell agrees.

The city council estimated there were one million tourists visiting Brighton in July. August is, therefore, expected to be even busier.
However,  Allan Stone from the council's press office told Latest TV today that he believes this is indeed the best time of the year for a road closure. Locals are on holiday and tourists don't often drive around the city centre.
In his statement he said these works might seem as emergency to some, so it has to be done now.

Southern Gas Networks is replacing the gas main which was leaking many times in the previous years. According to the company the replacement will reduce the necessity of further roadworks therefore there would not be many disruptions on King's Road.
